“We just held our first play street – here’s what made it a success”

“We Just Held Our First Play Street – Here’s What Made It a Success”

Words by Jack Hunter (Walk Ride Whalley Range)

Last Sunday, residents of York Avenue, in Whalley Range, held our first play street. With permission from the council, and help from Walk Ride Whalley Range, we closed our road to through traffic for an afternoon. Residents’ cars were still able to come and go, and the street was open to allow for chat and play.

Despite the rain, it was a really great day, with neighbours sitting out on a road that is more used to seeing speeding cars. Everyone benefited from a day with less traffic on a residential street, and there was lots of opportunity to talk about how we might make our street nicer and safer.

York Avenue Play Street talking

Here’s a few things that made it successful:

WE MADE A BIG EFFORT TO LET EVERYONE KNOW AHEAD OF TIME

Our street has a well used WhatsApp group, originally set up as a mutual aid group during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was really useful to gauge interest and let people know what was happening. We also posted flyers through the doors of residents, as well as those on neighbouring streets and local businesses. Mindful of the mix of people who live in our neighbourhood, someone provided an Urdu translation to go on the flyers.

EVERYONE MUCKED IN

Because we’d let everyone know, lots of our lovely neighbours then helped in various ways to make it a success. As well as those who helped set up, and those who were road stewards on the day, we had donations of chairs and equipment. Someone helped with printing, someone else with the translation to ensure we were being as inclusive as possible. Others helped post our flyers. It was a brilliant team effort and, because so many people got involved, it was lots of fun.

WE DIDN’T MAKE IT INTO AN ‘EVENT’

A play street is not a street party – it’s an experiment, designed to test what your road would be like if it was designed for people, rather than cars. We wanted it to look and feel as though it could be a normal day, not a one-off event. Keeping it low key was also essential given the local lockdown in Manchester – given the rules around gatherings and social distancing, we definitely didn’t want big crowds of people in our road.

WE DID LOTS OF TALKING AND LISTENING

There’s lots of interest on our street about how to tackle speeding. The play street was a great opportunity to talk together about what we could do, working with the council where necessary. In the days afterwards, we circulated a short, anonymous survey on our WhatsApp group to get feedback and suggestions for how to improve it next time.

WE’RE KEEPING THE MOMENTUM!

Everyone has been super positive about the day, so we’re already planning our next one in September. If people are up for it, we could even think about doing it much more regularly.

Manchester City Council have recently announced steps to encourage people to hold play streets, including removing the application fee previously attached to similar traffic orders. If you are living in Whalley Range and are interested in organising a play street for your road, email WhalleyRange@WalkRideGM.org.uk for support and help to make it happen.

If you live elsewhere in Greater Manchester, check our list of local groups, and if there isn’t one where you live then get in touch with Walk Ride GM for support on how to go about finding people who also want to improve their streets and forming a Walk Ride subgroup together – content@walkridegm.org.uk.

Spirit of Manchester 2020 – open for nominations!
spirit of manchester

In these times of uncertainty, we feel it is incredibly important to spread positivity and celebrate true examples of our sector at its finest: volunteering, leadership, governance, creativity, support and collaboration.

We have seen an incredible amount of kindness shown across the city of Manchester with many residents, volunteers, organisations and businesses adapting their normal day-to-day routine to help others in whatever way they can. This response symbolises exactly why we run the Spirit of Manchester programme. We know that giving recognition means a lot and can really make a difference.

So this year we are simply asking….

Who do you want to thank?

There will be no competitive element: we want to celebrate everyone as it is our collective response which is the real story we want to tell.

We ask for nominations of who you feel should be acknowledged, highlighted and thanked for their outstanding work in reply to the COVID-19 crisis. It can be absolutely anyone – friend, neighbour, local community group, business up the road: our only stipulation is that they either must live in or have delivered their support within the city of Manchester.

We will be hosting a ‘virtual’ awards event in early October, so please submit a picture of the person / organisation you are nominating and make sure you get consent.

State of the Sector 2020 – Make sure your voice is included in this important piece of work
state of the sector

The last survey in 2017 provided valuable evidence to decision makers of the important social and economic contribution the VCSE Sector brings to Greater Manchester and its individual boroughs.

However it is time to repeat the survey as there have been significant changes within the sector, local areas and Greater Manchester. Particularly as the impact of COVID-19 in 2020 has radically changed how we live and how the sector delivers its services.

Those who complete the survey will be entered into a prize draw to win either £1,000 or £200 for their organisation.

The State of the Sector is a partnership research initiative between 10GM (a joint venture to support the VCSE sector across Greater Manchester), GMCVO and locality partners. Leading the research on behalf of the partnership will be the University of Salford.

Future thinking about premises – what do you need?
Macc are hosting a space for VCSE organisations to meet and discuss what you currently need from a venue as this may have changed due to the impact of COVID-19. From other work we’ve been involved in recently we have heard from many people that there is concerns around current or future working space and we thought it would be useful to bring people together to discuss what options are available.

The discussion will include:
•    Future thinking about premises – particularly with the increased interest in remote working
•    Interest in sharing spaces generally – and specifically for things like counselling services where
smaller confidential spaces are needed
•    Interest in a city centre hub space
•    Offers available from VCSE organisations willing to safely share their current venue space
•    Sharing examples of solutions VCSE organisations have developed in response to venue challenges,
which other organisations may benefit from

This meeting is planned for Thursday 3 September 10.30am – 12pm and will take place via zoom. If you or a representative from your organisation would like to attend, please email Anna at: anna@macc.org.uk for further details.

Spirit of Manchester Story Week 2020 – No Going Back
spirit story

Are you a Manchester voluntary, community and social enterprise sector organisation?
Would you like to share a story of your new everyday activity, as part of the 2020 Spirit of Manchester Story Week in September?

We are looking for 20 VCSE organisations to share their stories during the week of 21-25 September.

Spirit of Manchester Story Week is a great way of celebrating the new extraordinary everyday work of the Manchester voluntary, community and social enterprise sector. Now in its fifth year, the Story Weeks have captured many stories that have included a community café, a befriending scheme, working with children, and distributing food to people and communities across the city. These are shared widely on social media including by supporters such as Manchester City Council and Manchester Health and Care Commissioning.

In Manchester, there are over 3,000 voluntary sector organisations providing a wide range of services across the city and many have changed these services or started new activities over the last few months. We will be recording one new everyday activity from a range of VCSE organisations over the space of a week (21-25 September) which will show the diversity and dedication of the sector in meeting the needs of people and communities across Manchester. We will then publicise this information via our website and bulletins, and on social media using the hashtag #SpiritofMcrStory.

If you would like to be part of this exciting project, email Helen at: helen@macc.org.uk or call 0161 834 9823.

What’s on the Range

Are you a musician, artist, photographer, crafts person living or working in Whalley Range/M16?
If so you need the What’s On the Range Christmas Web Page. What’s on the Range (WOTR) is a new project brought to you by Whalley Range Build Back Greener though the Arts. WOTR links Crafts, Creators, Communities, Cultures and makes Connections between the people of Whalley Range.
Our WOTR Christmas page will highlight the artists, crafts people, cooks, musicians who have lovely stuff to sell as Christmas Presents.
Perhaps you can sell art works? Create an event whereby a musician will play outside a house for a private micro-concert (great gift for neighbours or friends!) Some lovingly hand crafted things? A yoga class? A sample music lesson? A CD of your music or a download?
WOTR is providing this page as a way of putting Whalley Range people in contact with each other. We are not responsible for the buying and selling of goods and services. Everyone needs to make their own decisions about the things on offer here.
If you would like to join in by selling things you create, contact wotrange@gmail.com and tell us

WHALLEY RANGE FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE

For almost 20 years, Whalley Range for Peace and Justice (WRPJ) has held a card-writing event in St Margaret’s Church in Whalley Range on the first Saturday in December.
These have been in support of Amnesty International’s “Write for Rights” campaign.
This is a campaign where people are encouraged to write messages of support to people around the world who have suffered injustice.
Or to write to those in authority who could help end the injustices.

This year’s campaign runs from 2nd November until 31st December.
It covers 10 cases of injustice. Amnesty provide information booklets which describe the cases and advise where to write to and what to say.
Your communications may be by post, email or social media. Covid 19 has meant a rethink by WRPJ this year.
If Lockdown#2 ends as stated on December 2nd there will be a card writing event at St Margaret’s Church, Rufford Road, M16 8AE on Saturday 12th December from 12 noon to 5pm.

Numbers will be strictly limited and all social distancing measures that apply to community facilities will be in full force, including a one way system for entry and exit.

There will be 4 ‘sittings’ of one hour each at 12 noon, 1.15, 2.30 and 3.45.
A maximum of 6 people from one household or bubble may sit at a table together. Smaller groups and individuals will be seated in a COVID appropriate fashion.
Masks must be worn in the church by anyone aged 11+ unless you have an exemption.

We cannot replicate the atmosphere of our normal events when we pack well over 100 people into the church at any given point, but some elements will be preserved. For example there will be stalls by Palestine Solidarity Campaign, News from Nowhere and Kimbilio plus the popular second hand bookstall.
There will also be a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses.

Sadly refreshments cannot be served so you will have to bring your own flask!
And there will be no children’s activity table but children are welcome to bring their own activities to do at your table.

If you would like to come along please email WRPJ2020@gmail.com

Whalley Range Climate Action Group – Build Whalley Range Back Better

Whalley Range Climate Action Group – Build Whalley Range Back Better
Whalley Range Climate Action Group met our MP Afzal Khan with other groups as part of the Build Back Better campaign. We discussed the need for a green and fair recovery and called on Afzal to push the Labour party to step up their leadership role in climate and environmental and issues. We also urged him to pressure the government to build a sustainable, resilient and inclusive recovery whilst tackling the Climate Emergency immediately.
Whalley Range Climate Action Group believes we need new ways of thinking, shared inspiration and transformative action such as a Social Justice Green New Deal (for more detail see https://wbg.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Feminist-Green-New-Deal.pdf).  This will invest in infrastructure such as renewables but also invest in improving and increasing the low paid and low status jobs that are predominantly carried out by women and people of colour as caring, health and the arts.
We asked Afzal to support Whalley Range to secure investment for low carbon employment initiatives that are locally and equalities focused; local cycling and walking infrastructure, affordable public transport, including routes within the area, and car sharing and making our homes low carbon.

These initiatives would have a low carbon impact and help build a more inclusive recovery that has economic, environmental, social and community benefits for Whalley Range.
Next, the Whalley range Climate Action Group  hosted an exciting zoom meeting. Building Whalley Range Back Better – Lessons from Preston

Walk Ride Whalley Range Community Survey results

From Walk Ride Whalley Range

https://www.facebook.com/walkridewhalleyrange/

Huge thanks to everyone who completed our survey on how to make our streets safer for everyone. We had a whopping 313 responses in total!

Unsurprisingly, speeding was by far the biggest problem across the whole of our ward, followed by volume of traffic, lack of space for safe cycling, lack of space for social distancing and narrow pavements and pavement parking

We have shared this report with our local councillors – Angeliki Stogia, Mary Watson and Aftab Razaq – and asked them to work with us and local residents and businesses to think about ways to tackle these issues

We want this conversation to be accessible and inclusive of everyone. It’s important that solving a problem in one area doesn’t just move the problem somewhere else.  Read more and comment on the Facebook post: https://www.facebook.com/walkridewhalleyrange/

LGBT Foundation announce the launch of a new project and online survey

Project launched to improve housing and care options for older LGBT Manchester residents

NEW CLOSING DATE FOR SURVEY – 2nd August 2020 HAVE YOUR SAY!

logo of the LGBT Foundation

LGBT Foundation have today announced the launch of a new project, to better understand the housing and support needs of older lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) people across Greater Manchester and involve them in local strategic planning. The year-long programme of work will help to understand how housing options for LGBT people aged 55+ can be improved, and will inform Manchester City Council’s future housing plans, including the country’s first LGBT affirmative Extra Care development at Russell Road in Whalley Range.

Paul Martin OBE, Chief Executive of LGBT Foundation, says:

“With the impact of the Covid-19 crisis now expected to last for a number of years, it is more important than ever that older LGBT people have access to safe, affordable housing where they can be sure they feel safe and welcome. Many older LGBT people have grown up in a world hostile to their identities, and are worried about their future, particularly if they are likely to require care in later life. The development of the LGBT extra care scheme at Whalley Range is a vital and exciting step forward for our communities”

An online survey will gather information on the housing and care needs of the city’s residents, and inform the services, facilities, and housing options available.

The survey, which will run from 17th June-31st July, has been part-funded by government housing agency Homes England and can be accessed here https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/LGBTHomes. It can also be completed via a posted form, or over the phone. Respondents can choose to leave their details to be entered into a prize draw to win shopping vouchers.

Chorlton Bike Deliveries Survey

Image may contain: text

Chorlton Bike Deliveries was set up as a volunteer service to provide free deliveries around M21 area during the Covid 19 lockdown.

Two months in and we’ve made nearly 400 deliveries, travelled over 500 miles and reduced carbon dioxide emissions by the amount absorbed by 16 trees over their lifetimes!

We are thinking about the future for Chorlton Bike Deliveries and want to find out what is important to local people. If you live in or around Chorlton (approx 5 mile radius), please take a couple of minutes to answer these few questions.

If you are a local business owner, please complete a very short survey about future trading intentions here: https://forms.gle/v51cj6maXZFnn7oH9 so we can understand what support you may want from us.

You can also email chorltonbikedeliveries@gmail.com if you want to speak about working together. We are currently planning for the future of Chorlton Bike Deliveries.

If you are a resident of Chorlton or surrounding areas, please take a moment to complete the questionnaire below to help this process.

Thank you
