Chorlton Players – Arcadia on Thursday 17th – Saturday 19th August 2017

Arcadia is a play of ideas, mixing elements of farce, romantic comedy, mystery and tragedy. The story goes back and forth in time between the early 19th century and the modern day, tied together by the same location; a stately home in Sidley Park, Derbyshire. In April 1809, a comedy of manner ensues. The tutor to the Earl of Croom’s daughter has been spied in sexual congress with the wife of the poet, Ezra Chater, and is determined to avoid a duel of honour while trying to keep his indiscretions away from Lady Croom. Arguments and confusion over landscape architecture, carnal embrace and rice pudding ensue. Over 200 years later in the modern day, two researchers are visiting the home still lived in by the descendants of Lord and Lady Croom. One seeking information on a mysterious 19th-century figure called the Sidley Hermit, the other looking for information regarding Ezra Chater and his sudden disappearance from literature in 1809. Together, they piece together the events of the past and draw differing conclusions, resulting in a conflict of ideas between the two that could potentially tear history itself apart.

Entry price (public): Adults £7, Concessions £4

A recent ICM survey revealed that only 2% of the British public were aware of the extent of contribution of Muslims to World War One (WW1). Given the current political and social climate around the UK and Europe, and with the centenary memorials well under way and set to continue for the next few years, the British Muslim Heritage Centre (BMHC) has been had at work researching and documenting Muslim stories from WW1.
